5 tips for taking care of your surfboard

It goes without saying that if you have a board you want to look after it as best you can. There’s nothing worse then getting your new baby…. I mean board, home only to have it get a crack in it 2 weeks later. There are some quick and easy thing you can do to avoid this, they may seem like common sense but follow through is the most important thing. Take these steps all the time and you will prolong the life of your favourite board!

Here are 5 quick tips for taking care of your board.

  1. Get a couple of surfboard bags

Yes obvious but you would not believe how many people miss out this vital step. Just throwing your board in the back of the car leaves it vulnerable to dings and scratches. Whether is a surfboard sock for a quick trip down to the beach or a more robust board cover make sure you take the extra 30 seconds to give it protection.

2. Remove your wax from time to time

Stripping back the wax will reveal and small dings or cracks which may have opened up completely unknown to you. By taking the wax off you will be able to catch them out before they’re a major problem.

3. Deal with your dings and cracks as soon as they happen

Don’t procrastinate! The old “she’ll be right mate” will leave you with a completely broken board and having to buy and new one way sooner than you want to. If there’s any small problems get a repair kit and deal with them or take your board down to your favourite shaper so they can do it for you. It will save you a tonne of money in the long run.

4. Avoid extreme heat

Don’t leave your board in the car at any time but especially if it’s hot. Whether it’s in a board bag or not, the heat will force your board to expand and contract leaving it more vulnerable to future lumps and bumps.
